Years After a Bitter Fight, Prince and Warner Bros. Make a New Deal

  • By BEN SISARIO
April 18, 2014

More than 20 years after Prince protested against Warner Bros. Records by writing “slave” on his face and changing his name to an unpronounceable glyph, he has reconciled with that label through a new deal that gives him ownership of his old recordings and will include a major reissue campaign.

Warner Bros., which was Prince’s label from his 1978 debut, “For You,” into the 1990s, has struck a new global partnership with Prince that will involve licensing classic albums like “1999” and “Purple Rain” for reissue, according to a joint announcement released on Friday. The deal may also involve the release of a new album by Warner Bros., although that was not clear from the announcement. Representatives of both Warner and Prince declined to comment further.

“A brand-new studio album is on the way,” Prince said in the announcement. He added that both he and Warner Bros. “are quite pleased with the results of the negotiations and look forward to a fruitful working relationship.”

The deal may also offer a glimpse into the future of superstar record contracts in the wake of changes to federal copyright law that were made in the 1970s but are just starting to take effect. In 1978, authors of creative works gained so-called termination rights, which allowed them to recover the rights to their works from companies like publishers or record companies after 35 years; the first works affected by this rule came to be eligible in 2013.

Friday’s announcement did not address termination rights. But it is likely that that issue was in the background of any negotiations, and music industry executives and lawyers say that artists who recover their copyrights would gain significant leverage to bargain with labels for better deals to distribute and market their work.

In an unrelated deal announced this month, Prince also regained control of his publishing rights, which cover songwriting and are separate from the copyrights for recordings.
