Oh man! This is the kinda shyt that get's me talkin for days, but here goes...

Of course the foundation of the funk: the Godfather, P-Funk, Ohio Players, Barkays, Tower of Power, Kool & the gang, Sly and Cameo.
Then all the other stuff like, Mandrill, Pleasure, Maze, Brass Construction, ConFunkShun, Slave, War, George Duke, Lakeside, Larry Graham, Zapp, AWB, Blackbyrds, and a band from Ohio called SUN *only true O.G. funkateers will remember them, but worth the research for you young peeps. A serious funk band!!

Plus I listened to Jazz & rock, and I lived in DC for a while and got busy with the GO-GO music thing too.

Started out young, around 8 or so.So,I really had no other"favorite"as much as I would keep slammin' them against the funk competition.
I got so into Funkadelic,Parliament.Bootsy,Eddie Hazel, the Horny Horns,The Brides of Funkenstein,Parlet, etc. that I sort of carried it like a clone communicado. When Pedro Bell,Stozo and Overton Lloyd made cartoons joking on the other funk ,and Archie Ivy said,"all we say you play."I may have took it like that.
I'd say it had to be P-Related to relly get zeep into it.

HOWEVER,as time marched on I got into E.U.(Experience Unlimited),Rick James,Bob Marley(a lot of funky reggae),Gap Band(screamin' kickin' and protesting at times. They copied a few signature riffs from the 'P'),The Isley Bros.,Slave was probably more appreciated than your average funk band in my collection. The things Drac,Steve Washington and Steve Arrington could do were original their OWN sound.Cameo also was on the turntable quite a bit.

BUT,I would have my rock door blown open by Funkadelic's 'Maggot Brain',which allowed me to start listening to Jimi Hendrix,Led Zeppelin and other guitar and heavy drum assaults, which would also be peppered with the 80s new wave punk, plus I was right there as rap began to hit the scene.

I think starting out really young in the late 70s I was exposed to the the P-Funk,moreso, and then they turned me on to all kinds of music because the played all genre.I then went on to listen to all music.Backtracking rock, soul, reggae, jazz and funk at the oldies record stores.
Now I see P-Funk
as a genre unto itself.
You can do an entire radiostation of P-Funk with every type of tune on there.I listen to P-Funk Radio and it's all genre in one.
